State budget deal nears finish as deadline looms

Legislators try to avoid last year’s big mess

SPRINGFIELD—In the sixth year of one-party rule of Illinois’ government, with trust a commodity more elusive than tax dollars, Democrats were ready Saturday to make the on-time passage of a new state budget their most meaningful legislative accomplishment.
